Formal Research Program
Habitat and Urban Development
The Formal Research Program (FRP) of the Department of Habitat and Urban Development (DHDU) works on issues arising from unsustainable urban development, the underdevelopment of local technological design and innovation, and the risks of not having timely disaster prevention mechanisms, for the purpose of developing better urban, technological and prevention alternatives that contribute to a more human, harmonious, functional and sustainable built environment.
This FRP identifies three areas of concern to address in its research activities as a natural space for observation, analysis and reflection. These three areas of concern, all of which are present in our current reality, give rise to a series of objects of study that represent sections of this reality and help to define the specific problems that call for in-depth research.
1. Erratic and fragmented urban development:
- Shortage of housing, infrastructure and urban services.
- Inadequate structure and operation of urban mobility.
- Socio-spatial fragmentation.
- Imbalances in the inter-urban system.
- Inadequate urban management.
- Waste and irrational use of natural and energy resources.
2. Underdevelopment of local technological design and innovation:
- An economic model of production that inhibits the appreciation of regional product design.
- Deficient product and systems engineering.
3. Insufficient risk assessment and disaster prevention:
- Insecurity and risks in urban infrastructure.
